Why You Feel Stuck in Life (&Not a Motivation Problem)

Why You Feel Stuck in Life & Why It’s Probably Not a Motivation Problem – Nervous System Edition

Do you feel stuck in life?

Do you find yourself thinking:

“Why can’t I just do this?” “Why can’t I just get my life together?”

You’re not alone.

One day you feel so ready to make a change, you feel clear and motivated.

But then the next day you are overthinking, procrastinating, avoiding things and wondering what’s wrong with you.

It is so frustrating, disappointing and after a while, you start to turn on yourself. Maybe you lack discipline, motivation or willpower.

But what if that isn’t the problem, and the problem lies under the surface.

The real reason that you feel stuck in life

Most people assume feeling stuck is a mindset issue. This is what gets taught on social media, and many people claim to have the one hack or course that will change everything.

You try it. You’ve read hacks, you’ve listened to podcasts and you’ve joined the group programs.

But why can’t you implement anything? Or why doesn’t it work for you?

Maybe it is because these hacks weren’t built for you, the way you work uniquely, or your nervous system.

Your nervous system is constantly scanning your environment and your experiences for either: safety or threat.

Depending on what it detects, your brain and body respond differently.

This can alter your ability to make decisions, to focus, to implement something, take action, stay motivated, and more.

Not because your personality changed, or because you aren’t good enough.

Because your state changed.

Everyone has a nervous system – but everyone’s wiring is unique depending on past experiences.

Why you feel like a different version of yourself

Have you ever noticed these different versions of yourself?

You cycle between energy and motivation and lots of ideas. It’s the most infuriating thing and it messes with your head. You know you are so capable.

  • The overthinking everything that comes with the anxious version.
  • The days you can’t decide where to start because you are just overwhelmed.
  • You hide from the world because you are exhausted.
  • The confident version that feels capable and grounded.
  • These aren’t separate personalities, or mean there is something wrong with you.

They are different nervous system states.

And each state gives you access to different thoughts, emotions, behaviours, and resources.

Nervous system states explaining why you feel stuck

#1 The regulated state

When your nervous system feels safe, you are more likely to:

  • Think clearly
  • Feel motivated
  • Solve problems
  • Connect with other people
  • Feel confident and capable

This is the version of you that many people wish they could access all the time. But it isn’t to say the other states are wrong. They are very normal, and a part of being a human being. The key is to be able to flexibly move in and out of them, not get stuck in them and increase your window of tolerance.

#2 Activated state

When your nervous system detects threat or stress, you may experience:

  • Anxiety
  • Racing thoughts
  • Perfectionism
  • Overthinking
  • Feeling constantly busy

Sometimes this can be a mistake for productivity, but if it is coming from this nervous system state, then it can actually feel exhausting.

#3 Shutdown state

When stress becomes overwhelming, your system may move into shutdown.

This can look like:

  • Procrastination
  • Feeling numb
  • Lack of motivation
  • Avoiding responsibilities
  • Feeling disconnected from yourself

Many people mistake this for laziness. In reality, it is often a protective response. Protecting you from the overwhelm and the human instinct to preserve energy.

Why Self-Criticism Keeps You Stuck

When people don’t understand what’s happening, they usually respond with criticism.

They tell themselves:

“I should be doing more.”

“I need to try harder.”

“What’s wrong with me?”

But criticism rarely creates safety. If it did, it would have worked by now.

Judgment or negative self talk actually just makes things worse.

And without safety, your nervous system struggles to access the very resources you’re trying to build.

A better question to ask yourself when you feel stuck

Instead of asking:

“What’s wrong with me?”

Try asking:

“What state am I in right now?”

This small shift creates awareness, which then begins to turn into choice after time. This is the first step out of feeling stuck.

How to start supporting yourself

The goal isn’t to become productive all the time, it’s to understand yourself more deeply.

When you learn to recognise your nervous system patterns, you can start responding to your needs rather than fighting against them.

This is where real change begins.

Not through self-judgement, but through self-understanding.

Of course, this is just one (quite big) reason you might feel stuck, and something that I often come across in my coaching and therapy practice.

Other reasons why you might be feeling stuck:

  • Unmet needs
  • Lack of community
  • Lack of purpose or meaning in life
  • Lack of boundaries
